Happy Mother's Day!

Shane ended up making it to church today after all. He arrived from his fishing trip in Idaho at 2am and made it up in time to come to church. The kids did pretty well, except for Sage randomly shouting "Mama!" when he'd remember I was sitting on the stand. Of course I loved it.

Here are a few of the thoughts I about mothers I shared in church today.

"Sisters, find some time for yourself to cultivate your gifts and interests. Pick one or two things you would like to learn or do that will enrich your life, and make time for them. Water cannot be drawn from an empty well, and if you are not setting aside a little time for what replenishes you, you will have less to give to others, and even to your children." Elder Ballard, April '08 conference.

"Beware of the subtle ways Satan employs to take you from the plan of God and true happiness. One of Satan's most effective approaches is to demean the role of wife and mother in the home. This is an attack at the very heart of God's plan to foster love between husband and wife and to nurture children in an atmosphere of understanding, peace, appreciation, and support. Much of the violence that is rampant in the world today is the harvest of weakened homes. Government and social plans will not effectively correct that, not can the best efforts of schools and churches fully compensate for the absence of the tender care of a compassionate mother and wife in the home." Elder Richard G. Scott

"The biggest mistake I made as a parent is the one that most of us make...I did not live in the moment enough. This is particularly clear now that the moment is gone, captured only in photographs. There is one picture of my three children sitting in the grass on a quilt in the shadow of the swing set on a summer day, ages 6, 4, and 1. I wish I could remember what we ate, and what we talked about, and how they sounded, and how they looked when they slept that night. I wish I had not been in such a hurry to get on to the next thing: dinner, bath, book, bed. I wish I had treasured the doing a little more and the getting it done a little less."
Author Anna Quindlen

"Your success as a family...our success as a nation depends not on what happens inside the White House, but what happens inside your house." Barbara Bush

Thank you for all your helpful suggestions, and Happy Mother's Day!

Those are great quotes - I'm glad yours went well! I think I did ok, but the guy who spoke before me started in on his deceased mother and well, there went the mascara. I was a cry baby the whole time. Here's to another 3-4 years of being off the hook for speaking! :)

Thank you for posting these! It is nice to be reminded how important being a mother is and especially to take time to appreciate the moments while your kids are young instead of worrying about what needs to be done! I really needed to be reminded of that, so thank you!

Good ole Shane came through again. He was a great choice!

Jenna was right on... Your talk was thoughtful, entertaining and touching. A lot like your blogs.

WHAT does B L O G stand for?? It's such a strange little word!

Anyway... it appears as though you gave an excellent talk. I wish I could have heard all of it. I especially love Anna Quindlen. I've not read any of her writings. I think I will. She stated some of my own thoughts so perfectly.

Hi Carrie
I would have liked to hear you speak. All those things matter.

I love Chandi's quote: The source of good human's is still good families. (or something like that)
